Since the 14th century, tin and iron have been mined above and below ground in the area around Eibenstock. Many remains in the landscape still tell of this today, such as Raithalden and water ditches, but also pits and press buildings. The tin was processed in the surrounding hammer mills, and later tinplate production developed. When the tin ore ran out, the people of Eibenstock began to look for new sources of income.
